The Little Black Dress
The little black dress
Sitting around feeling nostalgic I opened my laptop and started
navigating through old pictures of me and my friends. The trip down the memory
lane is always so overwhelming. All those beautiful ladies dressed up feeling
their best for a sunny day out. But as I was going through old pictures of
mine, there was something I noticed. Every friend of mine owned something we
like to call the little black dress. I stopped to think about what was so
special about it that no girl could do without it and I came to realize that it
was the confidence attached to it that made women feel beautiful.
As history has it the black dress was brought into our closets by Coco
Chanel. After their terribly high and uncomfortable yet totally gorgeous heels
Coco Chanel added to a women’s life a best friend known as the little black
dress. My father has never understood why a women needs to dress her best to
feel her best. He says it’s all about what’s inside. Well I couldn't agree and
disagree more. Yes I feel confidence is a state of mind. But I also feel that
no men will ever understand our urge to put on our best clothes and walk out
feeling like a queen. They would never understand our endless shopping sprees.
They would never understand why we have to buy something similar to what we
already own. They would never understand why sales are the only events that
make our menstrual cramps go away. And finally they would never understand our
obsession with the colour black.
The little black dress is not just a dress; it works as our best friend.
It makes us feel confident on the day we feel utterly useless. It makes us feel
beautiful on a bad break up day. It makes us feel thin after we finish an
entire tub of ice cream mourning over why a certain dog had to die in a certain
movie. We women are extremely emotional creatures that no man has ever
understood. But history has it, you buy a little black dress for your woman and
your relationship is going to last way longer than you imagined. Such is the
power of the little black dress.
Some people think black is associated with mourning. Some feel it’s a
really dark colour with darker meanings. I say hell no. Black is classy. Black
is chic. Black is dangerous. Black is glamour. And black if for all. It does
not discriminate women on the basis of their social status or their figure.
Black is for all.
Its something we women cant do without, never have been able to. Santé,
to all the women out there with their little black dress. I called my girls and
planned a night out with our little black dresses. Time to feel young, vibrant,
confident and beautiful.
